Reading Canon at TDJS
At Thames Ditton Junior School, we value reading as a key life skill. By the time the children leave, they should be confident at selecting and reading a wide range of materials and enjoy regularly reading for pleasure. We have taken a considerable amount of time in creating a book canon that promotes a love of reading, has a well-structured progression of challenging literature and includes quality texts that will enrich teaching and learning. Our canon is designed and pitched with a broad, inclusive and ambitious range of books with themes that will enable children to become thoughtful, empathetic and informed citizens, where they have a good understanding of the diversities and complexities of the world around them.
We believe that this rich reading diet will equip the children with the tools to tackle unfamiliar vocabulary and material, which in turn will improve their own scheme of known words, improve spelling and improve grammar. This will lay the groundwork for effective communication in all subjects.
