Posted on: 23/05/2025Year 5 at Thames Young Mariners
This week, Year 5 have been focusing on one important skill: teamwork. From outdoor adventures to exciting challenges, the children have had plenty of opportunities to practise working together and supporting one another.
We started the week with a trip to Thames Young Mariners, where the children took part in kayaking and raft building. In the kayaks, they learned how to paddle in different directions, turn, and play some fun games on the water—including a fast-paced favourite called Catch the Zombie. There was lots of laughter (and splashing), but also some great determination and cooperation.
After that, it was time for raft building. Using barrels, ropes, and wooden planks, the children worked in teams to design and build rafts—and then test them out on the lake! Some floated better than others, but everyone got stuck in and enjoyed the challenge. One of the highlights for many was the chance to jump into the lake at the end—cold, refreshing, and a lot of fun!
Later in the week, we swapped paddles for precision with a session of archery. The children took turns learning how to aim and shoot arrows, encouraging each other and celebrating every bullseye (or close attempt!). It was great to see the focus and support they showed one another as they developed their skills.
We finished the week with an energetic round of laser tag, where strategy, communication, and teamwork were essential. Whether they were planning tactics or cheering on their teammates, the children showed how well they could work together under pressure—all while having a fantastic time.
It’s been a brilliant week of hands-on learning, plenty of laughter, and lots of memorable moments. The children have shown just how much can be achieved when they listen, support, and collaborate.
Well done Year 5!
Here’s some of what the children had to say about their special week:
Laser tag was so much fun. My team won the first round but lost the second. The trick to winning is cooperation with your teammates! – Nancy
I loved it. My favourite part was probably raft building because I liked floating on the lake while sitting on the barrel. I couldn’t believe the knots stayed tight enough for ten people to sit on it. It was amazing! – Lily
Thames Young Mariners was an amazing place! My favourite activity was kayaking because it was my first time. At the end we got to jump into the lake from the high dock. I would 100% go back there again. – Emily
I thought I wouldn’t be any good at kayaking but it was actually quite easy and I enjoyed myself so much! – Molly
We got to do lots of new things and learned so much! I would really recommend it to anyone who loves adventures! – Ava
